Ray was one of only two survivors when the Coast Guard's most famous rescue ship vanished from a convoy.

Historians still argue over what caused the disaster, and O'Malley would spend the rest of his life honoring his lost crew. For 64 years he represented them at the annual memorial service at the Escanaba's original homeport of Grand Haven, Michigan.
